Front facade of Houghton Hall, restored in 2007

Another wonderful Museum Friday trip to the SF Legion of Honor to view the exhibit Houghton Hall, Portrait of an English Country House.  Join us!  We have big plans for 2015. This is a fantastic way to meet your fellow club members while enjoying a stress-free day out.

Houghton Hall was built for the de facto first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and it is a key building in the history of Palladian architecture in England. It is a Grade I listed building surrounded by 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of parkland adjacent to Sandringham House.  The exhibit featured paintings by Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Andrea del Sarto, Artemisia Gentileschi, and John Singer Sargent as well as the wonderful history of the Walpole and Cholmondeley families.
